As explained in the article, while the exploit requires some user interaction (just clicking on a Web link) that's a standard method of attack seen often on the Windows platform. Thus, it was considered a valid attack.

As for the Java angle, I did some research into that today and Dai Zovi expanded on it. It's actually a QuickTime issue and could affect Windows as well. See the news brief on our site.
