Antivirus firms, test labs to form standards group

Security software makers, as well as independent and media-sponsored testing labs, have agreed to create an industry group to establish best practices and standards in the testing and rating of antivirus software, members of the nascent group told SecurityFocus on Thursday.

I don't think they're trying to tell people to always conduct the exact same test. If they did that, the results would be meaning less. Instead, they are asking for best practices.

For example, if you say that Product X identified 7 out of 10 viruses you tested, you should state which viruses you used and how you applied the scanner (manually or scan-on-access, etc.). Things like that will add context to the results so that users can draw their own conclusions. Also, they can only make recommendations, they're not a governing body.
