A recent federal district court ruling upholding seizures of electronic devices, such as laptops and iPhones, at the U.S. border has traveler- and civil-rights organizations worried that personal and sensitive data could be put at risk.

What about removing the hard drive, encrypting it, then shipping it to your destination and also shipping it home? Or ship the whole laptop. Might not be ideal for other portable devices, but taking with you a "clean" smart phone and leaving yours behind isn't a bad idea when traveling anyway; theft, loss, etc.
