Commission calls for cybersecurity czar 2008-12-09

While appointing a "czar" will be a nice P.R. stunt (among many) by the incoming administration, I doubt it will any more effective than anything the new administration is planning. It will not significantly improve the government's efforts at protecting national security-related information in electronic form. The government has a tendency to shove money at agencies that fail to protect information, while expecting those agencies/organizations already struggling, but succeeding, to continue to do more with less money. Additionally, until assessments and compliance become a major focus, we will continue to see sub-par performances.

The government should continue fining companies that fail to live up to expectations, like they did to that group out West (Los Alamos, Livermore, whatever). When the bottom line is affected, things will improve. Now, if we can just find a way to affect the government's bottom line...
