Well yes, most website defacements are simply another flag captured, but that isn't what is interesting. The defacements that provide subtle, or even obvious misinformation is what is potentially devestating. I'm sure anyone who is on top of the conflict could spread false word from a hacked, trusted news site, and give the party they represent strategic advantage. This has already happened to some extent hasn't it?

And that's just misinformation. Need we get into shutting down communications, or gaining control of a country's defense systems? _That_ is what the big deal is about. There are people who can deal more damage sitting in front of their terminal than in the streets with a fully automatic weapon.

I sympathize with your feelings. People are dying. That situation is real, and non hypothetical. It needs to be dealt with now.
