Whitelists, as you have described them, protect you only if you are an individual that gives out your email address to each person that needs to contact you, and gets an email address in return prior to that contact.
It doesn't work that way if you are trying to run a business. A business has to accept mail from anyone who hasn't yet spammed it, or that business will go very quickly down the tubes as "hostile to its customers".
Or maybe you think that businesses have no place on the Internet?
