Face it: a large part of the reason that hole remained dangerous for so long is that the sendmails in question were vendor supplied code on binary-only machines, and the vendors simply never saw fit to fix the problem. I'd venture to say that the majority of source sites heard about the problem, and fixed it, very early on...
