My first RSA Conference
Kevin Mitnick, special to SecurityFocus 2001-04-30

Ten thousand attendees, 250 vendor booths, and, still, something was missing.

RSA Conference 2K++ was pretty bad 2001-04-30

As a previous attender of RSA Conferences, I can safely say this last conference did have a lot of stuff missing, not just physical security. I found this RSA conference very disheartening, it was so full of marketing this year that about the only good thing it had to offer this year is that they added a "hacker" track to it. There were no new ideas, very little discussion, and a whole lot of "buy this, buy that." Conferences should be times to get together as a collective and spread the wealth of information, I didn't see that this year. Last year's conference was almost 1000% better, the marketing was kept mainly to the general sessions, and even then, the peddling was kept to a minimum. This year, the "hacker" track appeared to be the track with the least amount of marketing, and even then, roughly 1 of the 4 days was wasted by marketeers.

I think they could have done much better this year. I plan on submitting a paper for next year's conference, so I can do my part to keep the conference clear of marketing (if my paper is well received and I get the chance to speak.) Maybe others who felt the same way could do the same, so we can at least remove the marketing from the "hacker" track entirely.

BTW, Kevin, I recognized you during the conference, just didn't think it was all that appropriate to make a big deal about it (I thought you would have been very tired of it by the time I saw you Thursday morning.)
