Rumsfeld orders .mil Web lockdown
Kevin Poulsen, SecurityFocus 2003-01-16

U.S. defense secretary Donald Rumsfeld this week directed the armed service to strip military Web sites of information that could benefit adversaries, citing a terrorist training manual and a year-long review of the Department of Defense's 700-gigabyte Web presence.

Well, its about time that this issue of national security be addressed. I just wish it was addressed back when some folks were complaining about it. They never listened back then, but now, after an enemy announces it in a training manual, the all high and mighty pass policy against it... while this might help with future information from being leaked/in the open, it does not protect the past. Any .mil and I mean "ANY" has information that can be found on the web. An "internet predator" could really uncover the world if only the right targets were chosen. The US has been too open about this information. The web has made the collection/disemination of information too easy. For this reason and for national security reasons, military systems should be on a completely seperate network UNCONNECTED from the web, entirely. This means NO HIGH ASSURANCE GUARDS put between networks... just dumb...

ps: other countries shouldn't think their information is safe, either.... once your networks are connected to a network, you lost full control of your assets.
