How can we forget the history of our mighty Internet: ARPANET was the network that became the basis for the Internet. It was funded mainly by U.S. military sources and consisted of a number of individual computers connected by leased lines. ARPANET was replaced over time in the 1980's by a separate new military network and NSFNet (become the backbone of the Internet). Source : techtarget.com
