Hmmmm.. I think the point that elliptic was making was the drastic difference in sentencing used in the US vs foreign nations. Esp. the EU (in my mind.) It is an interesting note. However, I would be more likely to be proud of more strict sentencing than I would be ashamed of it. One thing that I think should be noted is that the criminal justice system of the US is very slow to adapt to the Digital Culture (ex. DeCSS, and any part of the DMCA). This most likely can be attributed to the capitolist nature of our society and the fact that a great many of our politicians are more than happy to take some corporate funding if they feel there is a positive spin that they can sell to their constituents. It would be my hope that they would be more aware of citizens and their rights. That would seem to be the domain of the Appeals Circuit lately...
