Ex-Lawmakers Endorse National I.D. System

The road to hell... 2001-11-20

...is paved with good intentions. "Nationwide identification will make us safer" is something I keep hearing, never accompanied by a mention of how or why. Like Microsoft's software "activation" it's not going to affect terrorists, it will probably successfully reduce the number of visa holders quietly staying past their revocation date, and it'll be a burden on the same American citizens it's supposed to save. But, by then the politicians will have moved on to their next crusade to save us from ourselves and others, except for a few that will hold hearings to show how concerned they are. Cynical? You betcha. Complete failure of the federal and state governments to prevent Social Security numbers from being used for things other than Social Security, and therefore leaving the system and it's unwilling users (all of us) open to wide abuse has made me wary of any newer more far-ranging implementation.
