I can see that the Broadband ISPs should not be expected to support the firewall software; however, I don't believe that they should make its removal a precondition of providing help to the user. If there business is to provide a functioning pipe and that's all, then they should not require interference with any part of the user's software setup. Conversely, if they DO require some say in the configuration of the user's machine, then they should perhaps recommend and support an approved firewall package. I don't think that they should necessarily have their cake and eat it.
