How is this any different? This guy installed software he was not supposed to install. It doesn't matter if it was for the betterment of humankind. You don't just install software without approval from the people who own those computers. And yes - the school OWNED those PCs and therefore has a right to control what is running on them.
120 years seems a little absurd. But a year or two in jail and some probation time would be appropriate.
