Such a good job with WInXP in fact, that the FBI got involved, and issued a warning, and a strong suggestion to disable UPnP, just because MS didn't put in an error handler.
> Only solution is to freeze features and hunt for bugs - but it won't work - users won't use "old" software for long time.
Not entirely true... I still talk with customers using Win3.x... how old is that now? 17-20 years?
> majority of companies use MS products because those are good
More like because they aren't/weren't given a choice in software. Go to your local PC supplier, and see what software configurations they offer.
> As for me, I don't see any competition to MS Office, for instance, and this is what most of users need.
Star Office by Sun. Can do pretty much everything MS Office can do, plus it is free. I don't think you can beat free ;) Need is another thing that has to be looked at carefully. Star Office has filters for the (nearly whole) office suite.
I personally use both Windows, and Linux, both at work, and home. And my rating in general, Linux wins, hands down. It has more power for what it does, and could walk over Windows in most areas. Although I do agree that most people would prefer using windows, but that is mainly because that is what they have been herded into using. I also have to agree on certain areas with windows though. It's usability is a lot higher (at the moment) than Linux, purely because it has been around longer, and has been worked on. Linux is catching pace though, with KDE, Gnome, and other assortments.
Comparison between the two operating systems is difficult for now, but certain elements are bringing them closer together to make a comparison easier. It didn't take me long to pick up Linux, but then again, I try and try again until it works, some people aren't ready for that kind of commitment to an operating system, so Linux may not become main stream until coders can work out those tiny issues that most people cannot work out.
