Lawmakers slam anti-virus biz
Kevin Poulsen, SecurityFocus 2000-05-10

Love Letter worm was an "utter, abject failure" of industry, says one Congressman. Industry blames liberal judges.

You walk into a bar (Windows) After the usual looking around (surfing the WEB), you see someone that looks attractive and you get to talking and decided after a while that the two of you should spend the night together (you click on an e-mail that says "ILOVEYOU"). You wake up the next morning and find your wallet is gone, along with you address book. Your private, personal information is now no longer yours. Oh, and by the way, you caught an STD (your system is infected with a trojan, virus, worm...whatever).

SO: do you blame the person that rolled you (the email)?

Do you blame the bar (Windows)? Do you blame the community accessed through the bar (The WEB)?

WELL: if you're immature or immoral, you blame everyone else but the one person who made a DECISION to do something: YOU. If you're immature or immoral you cry "It's not my fault! No one told me! I didn't know!"

AND: If you're immature or immoral, you attempt to rally others to your side and pass laws against the behavior that hurt you: without ever realizing that no law you have ever passed, or will ever pass, will STOP someone from doing the "bad thing" again. The law you make will only punish if someone else does the "bad thing" again: but it will not stop them from doing it.

Now remember, this is only an analogy: and analogies only illustrate, they do not explain.

Good luck using your brains, you'll need them...
