It plays like this:
Industry refuses to pay for real security. Angry jerk looses clumsy attack program, gets lucky. Large numbers of the clueless and unfortunate get victimized. Anti-Virus vendors scream "the sky is falling", wildly exagerate numbers of victims, make baseless, fantasic claims of dollar costs. Clueless Newa Media creates feeding frenzy, repeates and magnifies A-V industry claims. A-V industry quotes Clueless News Media, use these quotes for "credibility", sells many new products. Politicians jump on the "Free Media Exposure" bandwagon, wring hands in public, laugh up their sleeves in private. Politicians then pass laws further restricting freedoms of the law-abidding, while having NO impact on the lawless. New distraction hits front page, everyone forgets the virus. Businesses go back to business as usual, refuse to pay for decent protection. Angry jerk looses clumsy.....
As long as the circle-jerk continues, we'll be subject to these periodic bouts of insanity.
