Student owns up to Texas Uni cyber-heist

A University of Texas student has been charged with hacking offences following a computer break-in at the university earlier this month that lead to the disclosure of 55,200 past and present University of Texas faculty members and students.

yeah sure, but the charge doesnt consider it as a misuse of access but as "unauthorised access to a protected computer and using the Social Security number of another person to commit a federal offence"

as far as i concerne i dont see him hack anything - the fact that he could read this information was a mistake the admin has to stand in for and the fact that he took the social security data might also be of backup purposes or because he is searching for the new adress of his ex gf or something. the misuse of one of those numbers hasnt been declared.

its simply the wrong charge and it wouldnt be possible to bring this poor guy to court with that in my country. he hasnt done one of the things they say but another thing. bah.
