Ann Harrison, SecurityFocus 2002-04-17

Distributing thousands of card readers, guarding against corrupt insiders, defending against fraudsters and hack attacks... Plans to create a national ID card are fraught with peril.

I find Mr. Maxwell's logic quite intriguing-- his association has not been tasked by anyone to take any action, be it procedural or logistical, to circumvent the limits of the role of each state administrator by state statute. These people are not peace officers, they have no investigative mandate, and have no charge to assemble any kind of resource for use which has not been approved by legislation. Even then, no state is required to provide information. Frankly, I think these DMV administrators could find better use of their time, like trying to reduce fraud and graft in their own organizations. Law enforcement has everything it needs to do its job-- its called the NCIC system. Anything conglomerating the resources of independent states is exactly that, a conglomerate, and yes this is a national ID card.
