Hacker-engineer Andrew "Bunnie" Huang says he's already pre-sold between 400 and 500 copies of his self-published tell-all "Hacking the Xbox: an Introduction to Reverse Engineering," weeks before its scheduled May 27th publication date, despite -- or perhaps because of -- looming suspicions by some that the book skirts the edges of legality.

You are absolutely incorrect. ODBII, the system used in modern cars for diagnostics and control of certain car subsystems, is a published standard protocol and you can write your own software for it if you'd like. There are already several packages out there that allow you to do generic ODBII and proprietary ODBII implementations like VW/Audi VAG protocol. The VAG COM package from Ross-Tech.com will do proprietary VAG ODBII protocol without problems, and I can do anything the dealer can do with the VAG 1551 at the VW dealership.

I paid $200 for my VAG COM software from UWE Ross at Ross-Tech.com, and that included the serial to OBDII port interface cable. Uwe lives in PA, and he's not been under any legal hassles. There are other comparable packages out there that do similar things. You can even go to Sears and buy a generic ODBII diagnostics tool for relatively cheap.
