I think Mitnick is telling the truth about his escapade with Sprint's switches, and phone line manipulations. They say "truth is far stranger than fiction". Mitnick has no motive to lie, and the Telco's have a tendancy to do just that,(they call it damage control). Yes it is indeed odd for a convicted ex-hacker to help this out-call service, but what if your bizznes depended on the local phone system. How many legit bizz people need telephone accsess, and what if your calls where suddenly diverted, intercepted, tapped, etc. To me the deeper issue here is the security of the Telco's, and the publics right to have a secure, and fair accsess to the phone system.
