The Arcade Underground
Kevin Poulsen, SecurityFocus 2000-07-10

They save Pac Man and Pengo for future generations while ducking the copyright police. Being an arcade archivist is no game.

Yes, they are - and that's also the answer to your question. Sony Corp. is a perfect example of corporate self-interest being top priority, and to hell with their customers. They're utter control freaks. Another example of this (which you may or may not remember, depending on how far back and whether you've been following the home console scene) is Capcom's "Resident Evil: Director's Cut", which was supposed to contain all of the previously-edited graphic FMV footage from the Japanese release's intro and cut-scenes, and was marketed to an unsuspecting public thusly, but was scrubbed at the last minute at the behest of SCEA while still being sold to the American public as "uncut". Their reason for defrauding the Amercian consumer? Supposedly, when the Japanese in-house production studio who oversaw the production of the "uncut" version did the translating, they neglected to translate one teeny, tiny bit of fine print in a nearly-invisible sidebar of the title screen that listed the patent information.

It was a simple oversight which might have been easily rememdied by any OTHER company before giving the American Playstation owner the proverbial middle finger. But not Sony. No no no, they know where THEIR loyalties lie, and now, so should everyone else....

This is why I WON'T be getting a PSX 2, and why I'll instead continue to support and promote emulation as a whole, as well as such emulators as bleem!.
