The Arcade Underground
Kevin Poulsen, SecurityFocus 2000-07-10

They save Pac Man and Pengo for future generations while ducking the copyright police. Being an arcade archivist is no game.

Too late. ROMs are too easily available on the net. 2000-07-20

Most people aren't going to pay for something they can already get easily for free. Take the small percentage of retro gamers that actually *would* pay for these old games, and you're facing a rather small potential market.

Remember the IDSA? They tried shutting down a whole stack of ROM sites in the past, sending warning letters to dozens of sites carrying both ROMs and emulators. Once the storm was over, it didn't change anything.

Problem is, most nostalgia freaks with a bent for these old games probably already have a copy of MAME and the ROMs they want to play anyway.

The publishing companies have missed the boat as far as retro gaming is concerned. With the vast number of retro titles available, no one company can offer a package that is as comprehensive as MAME for playing these old games.
