Think you've heard more than enough about war driving and Wi-Fi insecurity? Two days of electronic eavesdropping at the 802.11 Planet Expo in Boston last week sniffed out more evidence that most Wi-Fi users still aren't getting the message -- or are comfortable broadcasting their e-mail into the ether.

[Even if WEP was turned on, after seeing what the folks in the Security tutorial could do to 'somewhat easily' decipher it, what's the point?] So, the reality is that the wireless networks at the show were NOT secure but were convenient so people used them!!! [I would guess this is no different at ANY public hotspot.] The point is that this is the current state of the 'art' in WiFi networks and the onus is on the PROVIDERS to build up a more secure infrastructure using all of the new security protocols mentioned at the show (EAP, TTLS, etc.) However, the reality is that most WiFi hardware out there is not yet capable of using these new, secure protocols (yes, some mfgrs will provide flash upgrades for this but will users do the upgrades or will it have to wait until their next WiFi card (or PC) purchase?)
BTW, If you haven't guessed, I was at the show and all of my traffic was through IPSec VPN (except for browsing web sites looking for info on WiFi-related security and such) !!
