Slammer worm crashed Ohio nuke plant network
Kevin Poulsen, SecurityFocus 2003-08-19

The Slammer worm penetrated a private computer network at Ohio's Davis-Besse nuclear power plant in January and disabled a safety monitoring system for nearly five hours, despite a belief by plant personnel that the network was protected by a firewall, SecurityFocus has learned.

absolutely agreed upon.

there are (and shall be) more microsoft related worms coming out then any other because:

a. microsoft products are widely used and hence easy to target in order to effectively and rapidly affect large #s of hosts on the internet

b. the hatred against microsoft is another key motivation. why arent there that many worms coming out that affect any ibm products? or oracle? or unix? or sun? ....

a key thing to remember: anything made by humans (software or hardware) will have vulnerabilities period. its how early they are detected and resolved and PUBLISHED that will make the difference.

i wonder when cnn will start to publish these kinds of patch availability notices on their tv network. they should do that as often as they say "..again, we have received unconfirmed reports that there may have been a tornado that hit blah blah..."

ever wonder why cnn makes it sound like such a sad story..."450 000 computers were affecte d by this worm...investigations continue...its a sad tragedy..." instead of pointing out "patch the damn computers and keep updated software on it bitch!"
