Racketeering suit filed against DirecTV
Kevin Poulsen, SecurityFocus 2003-09-03

Lawyers for three men whose online equipment purchases made them targets of DirecTV's anti-piracy campaign are hoping to turn the tables on the satellite company by suing under the mob-busting Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) federal organized crime statute.

A corporation is technically a singular individual under law. Therefore, corporations are bound by law just as individuals are. Politically, corporations are given carte blanche by legislative bodies in large part because corporations fund political campaigns. In the process, individuals, especially those with little in the way of disposable income, to spend on litigation and legal defense, are helpless in the face of ever-increasing corporate domination. We The (little) People are the ones who have established this Union (United States) and should be protected by our Constitution and Bill of Rights. We are supposed to be innocent until proven guilty. Not guilty unless we can afford legal defense. On the face of it, purchasing equipment from the likes of web sites listed earlier in this thread does appear to be suspicious at best. But, it is still the case that even folks who made such purchases are to be afforded the assumption of innocense UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY. It is extortion when an entity threatens an adverse action and will take money to not so act, without adjudication. The Digital Millennium Copyright Act may be well intended, but looking deeper, it appears to suffer from the same short-sighted rush to a solution with considerable disregard for the rights we U.S. Citizens are afforded by our Constitution and Bill of Rights as does the so-called U.S. Patriot Act and other recent Acts. They are well intention reactions to a most horrid event (9/11/2001). Do we now disregard the Constitution and Bill of Rights and prosecute everyone who is not of the same morally bankrupt political persuasion as Bush/Ashcroft/Rumsfeld and company, who worship political power and the almighty dollar above all else? Is the Carlyle Group the upcoming Umbrella Corporation bent on controlling the world for the gain of its corporate board and friends? Or do we do the right thing because it is morally right?
