If you lived in a large city, detriot for example.
Then the person told everyone in the city that you were unsecure. You also have multiple entry points and some you don't know about.
Do you think other people will try your security? Especially individuals with not so good intentions.
Because right now with NYT, all the script kiddies are trying to get a little peice of the fame pie.
I believe the question is not what lamo did, but why?
To secure NYT's internal proxies?
