Lamo surrenders, is released
Kevin Poulsen, SecurityFocus 2003-09-09

SACRAMENTO, Calif.--A federal judge ordered Adrian Lamo released to his parents' custody Tuesday afternoon, but barred the hacker from using computers, and ordered him to obtain full-time employment pending trial.

I believe that Lamo should face some consequences. What he did was wrong; there is no question about that. He even admitted that there are consequences to his actions. What he should have done is contacted the NY Times and said, "Hello, I'm Adrian Lamo, you might have heard of me. I'm interested in doing a Pen Test on your systems for the outrageous price of $0.00.? Then they may have said yes, may have said no. If they said yes then he signs a NDA and they feel better about it. If they say no, he knows that they?re going to probably press charges if he does it.

I also agree with the bond and not being able to use a computer. If you think about it, Lamo is homeless. If he had a home he would statistically be less likely to run. And using a computer got him here; it's the safest for the government if he doesn't use a computer until the case is cleared. I?m not saying he?d do anything illegal but the judge doesn?t know that, the judge is being safe.

Please, don't get me wrong. I don't believe that he should be treated as a rapist or murderer. I believe that he will/should not be sentenced to prison time.

I?m glad Adrian loves computer security. If I ever get more of a presence on the Internet I?d love for him to test my systems for free (I?d even buy lunch). I?d also like to meet him and talk with him but I believe that there are better ways to explore.
