Yes what Mr. Lamo did was illegal, so is carrying a handgun in New York City. If I were in New York City I would carry a handgun. If arrested I would not expect to be treated the same way under the law as a man who carried a gun and robbed a bank with it. Even if I was arrested leaving a bank, in posession of a handgun.
You see a lot of people are being charged and sentenced according to their POTENTIAL to cause harm. Mr. Lamo may have broken the law, he also may have had access to very sensative data which if misused could have caused the Times great embarresment (although probably not as much as Jason Blair). This is not the same as actually doing those things. The law as it is currently written and enforced does not make that distinction.
You also assume that I am a liberal, I am actually perched to the right of Rush Limbaugh, not that that makes any difference whatsoever.
You assume to speak for "everyone", by stating that "everyone" is sick of it. Who is this group of "everyone'? Where are their headquarters? Do they have a newsletter to which I could subscribe? Some document that lists you as their official spokesman? If not then you should just say "I am sick of it" and let your argument stand or fall on your merit and ability to persuade others to your view.
