That seems to be your attitude, and is certainly Lamo's. I've heard the man speak, shaken his hand (listened to Marcus Ranum chastise him) and really, he's just a kid who's got plenty of time and is exploiting KNOWN vulnerabilities in complex networks. Should the admins/security gonks have locked those systems down? You bet. But last time I checked, it's a wee bit difficult to do that with 100% certainty in a moderately complex environment. Particularly if you don't have good people.
To me it's about the law. Love it or hate it, the kid broke it. Time to pay the piper. That's not an ethical or moral judgement, just a practical one...
