Heckenkamp Challenges Computer Ban
Kevin Poulsen, SecurityFocus 2003-12-03

Accused eBay hacker Jerome Heckenkamp is back in federal court in California this month, but it isn't for his ever-slipping trial date. His attorneys are mounting a constitutional challenge to court-ordered pre-trial restrictions that have kept him from computers and the Internet since his indictment nearly three years ago.

The accussed is a network engineer by profession. Having access to computers is *essential* for him, not only to pursue his profession but to stay abreast of technical developments in the field. After three years out in the cold, his career is basically completely hosed now; all that money and time spent on his education is undone.

Not such a big problem if he was a CONVICTED cracker, but this guy hasn't even gone to trial yet; so far as the law is concerned, he is an innocent man against whom an accusation has been made. And even if he is acquitted, he will receive no compensation for having his life ruined.

This is an evil, evil system.
