It is tragic, that in a country the espouses forgiveness (even to Presidential philandering) that good people with past misdeeds are not given the chance to start again. The purpose of punishment in our criminal system is to pay their debt to society and to reform the criminal. Yet, no effort is truly made in prisions to reform criminals. Further, when released, the "debt to society" seems to be impossible to pay off, thereby making it even more difficult for criminals to reform. Something is wrong with this.

I personally know a large number (very large) of hackers who have commited crimes that have never been charged or convicted. Yet, years later, they are productive and successful members of society who wield a great deal of respect and authority. It appears the old saying is more true today than ever, "its only a crime if you get caught!"
