Alleged WebTV 911 hacker charged with cyberterrorism
Kevin Poulsen, SecurityFocus 2004-02-26

FBI agents arrested a Louisiana man last week for allegedly tricking a handful of MSN TV users into running a malicious e-mail attachment that reprogrammed their set-top boxes to dial 9-1-1 emergency response.

Interesting because of the flimsiness of the application of the law here. The man was cited as a "cyberterrorist" because he had some victim's systems dial 911. It wasn't even a worm, but a script he sent only to some targetted individuals he disliked.

Yet, if he had left a bloody chicken's head at their doorsteps, he would not have been labelled a "terrorist". Which is worse?

Yet, even though doing something horrendous like cutting up a chicken and leaving it on someone's doorstep might inspire true terror in the targets... such "terrible" behaviour is not anywhere in the same league with assassinations and bombings.

Or, do our police not even understand this?

When you twist the law like this it causes people to ignore it as hypocritical.
