Alleged WebTV 911 hacker charged with cyberterrorism
Kevin Poulsen, SecurityFocus 2004-02-26

FBI agents arrested a Louisiana man last week for allegedly tricking a handful of MSN TV users into running a malicious e-mail attachment that reprogrammed their set-top boxes to dial 9-1-1 emergency response.

Messing with the 911 system certainly could be considered cyberterrorism... 2004-02-29

The 911 system is very important for the safety of the citizens of the USA. Considering that people reporting a terrorist incident - the release of chemical or biological agents, or other similar event would need to use 911 to report it, the offense is certainly a serious one. If the targets of the attack were in different cities, some of which may have not had adequate local laws to deal with this, then the use of a Federal law certainly would be considered.

Any attack against the 911 system is pretty serious stuff. Fires, accidents, medical emergencies all are things that are important to everyone in this country.

Everybody sees the term "PATRIOT ACT" as a trigger for a knee-jerk reaction, when most of them have probably never read the law or understand any of it. Maybe we should label it "the BIG PATRIOT ACT", because everyone knows that all BIG things are evil. BIG Business, BIG Oil, BIG Goverment. BIG Idiots...
