Alleged WebTV 911 hacker charged with cyberterrorism
Kevin Poulsen, SecurityFocus 2004-02-26

FBI agents arrested a Louisiana man last week for allegedly tricking a handful of MSN TV users into running a malicious e-mail attachment that reprogrammed their set-top boxes to dial 9-1-1 emergency response.

If this guy were a bit smarter he would known prank calling 9-1-1 is a crime. If he were just a bit smarter he would have made their boxes dial 1-900-sex-numbers. That would have cost them money ($2.99 a minute). I dont believe that could have been translated into cyber terrorism. The most he would have gotten then was a terms of service violation. As for "malware" sending him the victims SSID (box id), the purpose of this was to hack into their webtv accounts. Even this is a simple TOS violation, dispite the fact he could have stolen pesonal information, or done malicious things to their account. This in my opinion is worse than making them dial 9-1-1. For the record his screen name was basicII (at) webtv (dot) net [email concealed] aka Ty Hart.
