War of words rages over Internet taps
Kevin Poulsen, SecurityFocus 2004-04-14

The public comment period on a Justice Department proposal to make the Internet easier to wiretap ended Monday with most of the filed comments tracing a clean line between two opposing camps: on the government's side, federal, state and local law enforcement agencies who perform wiretaps, allied with companies who sell surveillance equipment and services; on the other, Internet companies who would be forced by the plan to make changes to their networks, along with advocacy groups concerned about slowed innovation and an incursion on Internet privacy.

Oh good grief. Calm down. Did you even read either of these articles in the bill of rights? Apparently not.

Here, try again: http://lcweb2.loc.gov/const/bor.html

Pay attention to the part about 'UNREASONABLE Search & Seizure' and 'WITHOUT Due Process of Law'.

There is a proper procedure to be followed, IE, they must obtain a court order to turn on the wiretap. They are not asking for any ADDITIONAL capabilities that they didn't already have, they only want to maintain the same capability to monitor as they have had in the past.

How on earth do you have ANY criminal prosecution without evidence? Do you want the police to be able to protect you against organized crime? Car theft rings? Terrorists?

You prefer anarchy? Locked doors will not protect any of us if we prevent law enforcement from ENFORCING THE LAW.

Focus on the real threats. Save your outrage for crimes not prevented that could have been... for lives lost that should have been saved... abducted children that should have been protected... for violations of due process and unjust conduct by law enforcment and punishment for those who step beyond their authority when they do so.

I'm more concerned about some hacker violating my privacy than any law enforcment officer or government worker. They're just trying to do their duty and make a living. Save your chicken little act for the real threats.
