War of words rages over Internet taps
Kevin Poulsen, SecurityFocus 2004-04-14

The public comment period on a Justice Department proposal to make the Internet easier to wiretap ended Monday with most of the filed comments tracing a clean line between two opposing camps: on the government's side, federal, state and local law enforcement agencies who perform wiretaps, allied with companies who sell surveillance equipment and services; on the other, Internet companies who would be forced by the plan to make changes to their networks, along with advocacy groups concerned about slowed innovation and an incursion on Internet privacy.

Big brother

No, it's worse-- it's as if they could come to your door with a piece of paper and tell you that you have to open it! Oh wait, they can already do that, can't they.

If you eliminate law enforcment's ability to prosecute criminals, all the PGP and locked doors in the world are not enough to protect YOU and your security.

Law enforcment has to be able to gather evidence and enforce the law. What you and I need to concern ourselves with is ensure that there are reasonable limits, proper procedures to follow (IE, court order), and that those procedures are followed and law enforcement personnel get their knuckles rapped when they aren't.

THAT's how you deal with irresponsible or criminal people in government or other positions of authority... you make sure you have methods in place to catch them at it, and make the punishment very, very severe.
