War of words rages over Internet taps
Kevin Poulsen, SecurityFocus 2004-04-14

The public comment period on a Justice Department proposal to make the Internet easier to wiretap ended Monday with most of the filed comments tracing a clean line between two opposing camps: on the government's side, federal, state and local law enforcement agencies who perform wiretaps, allied with companies who sell surveillance equipment and services; on the other, Internet companies who would be forced by the plan to make changes to their networks, along with advocacy groups concerned about slowed innovation and an incursion on Internet privacy.

A grown up
> Sure some extremest want to attack "America" but do you really believe any of these aggressors specifically hate and want to kill you? I don't think so.

Are you serious? What world are you living in? Do you really believe that all we had to do is invite Osama over for tea after September 11th, and he would have apologized?

Do you really believe that the world is full of peace and love and we just need to get along? Do you know who Neville Chamberlain was? You might do well to take your lessons from history rather than from science fiction.

> At the risk of sounding like a parent here..

Don't worry, you don't, believe me. You sound like a naive child. The world is not a nice safe playground. There are a lot of bullies out there who take your peace overtures for weakness. Humanity hasn't matured much since 1936. Diplomacy has to be accompanied by strength and resolve.

>I believe that America has a lot of growing to do.

I think exactly the reverse. America is mature, resolved, and facing up to responsibility rather than running from it or buying time by appeasing it.

I'm a nice guy. If you're broke down on a deserted highway, I'll probably stop and help you. If you need money for lunch I'll probably give you some. If your house is on fire in the middle of the night I'll risk my life to help you get your children out. But if you hurt my wife or my kids, I'm going to lay you out flat. There is no place dark enough for you to hide in.

IMHO, America's a lot like that.

If you're my friend, you appreciate that. If you're not, heaven help you.

Again, just MHO.
