With identity theft rampant, we need to be cautious with our personal information. But consumer advocates say there's something else we ought to be vigilant about: expensive services for identity theft protection.

No one wants their home to burn down to the ground-yet we have homeowners insurance, just in case. People balk at protecting the single most inmportant asset we have. You can decry the practices of credit-grantors and the like, that is not going to change the fact that the first time we ever fill-out a form with our information on it and handed it over to someone else, we lost control over where it would ever end up. That didn't happen the last time or last year or last week, those times just compounded the situation. With a 1 in 6 chance of my identity being stolen and a less than 5% conviction rate 100 bucks is a small price to pay.
