Feds urge secrecy over network outages
Kevin Poulsen, SecurityFocus 2004-06-23

Giving the public too many details about significant network service outages could present cyberterrorists with a "virtual road map" to targeting critical infrastructures, according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, which this month urged regulators to keep such information secret.

It appears increasingly obvious that government proposals need to be treated with severe suspicion.

This specific proposal is another that will serve to incrementally advance the arise of an American surveillance/police state.

Somehow in a most peaceful and wise utilization of power fashion, it should not be allowed into manifestation.

Outside the domain of blatant political forces, we need more arise of whole system analysis and evaluation that is peer reviewed.

And rather than some elite congregation of politically deemed experts, these peers should be everyone wanting to provide an opinion in ideas or information about about whatever at issue.

Yes, many have been braincultured to perceive this as dreamy yet the bureaucrats and politicians need to be reminded that it is "We American People and Our Public Servants".

The more these servants are allowed to think and act like public supervisors, nannys, directors and leaders, the more our freedom and liberty will diminish in reality (though not in edicts, speeches and soundbites) and the strength of America as an open society teeming with information sharing, problems resolving and progress bettering will continue to disintegrate.

I suggest we remain cognizant that except in certain extreme cases such as in the knowhow for making WMD, secrecy (as too, ignorance)is an enemy of freedom and we must not allow its slow growth (like boiling a frog alive) into the pervasive guiding mentality for conducting normal activities within our economic, social and personal lives.

Security is found in trust and caring for one another, in other words, within healthy thoughts about ourselves and in treating others as if they were family. When this is lived in daily experience one needs not think nor act in continuous fear of one's self or others or for what they might possibly do.

I apoligize for being a bit preachy about this yet the horizon of our future does not appear very supportive to the emergence of a society i want to live within.
