The problem with wiretaps is their abuse not their proper use.
As long as a statute can be tailored to "minimize" or prevent the invasion of communications that are lawful then who cares if the activities of criminals are captured and then used against the criminal.
How to prevent law enforcement from conducting an unauthorized wiretap or obtaining wiretap authority by making a perjurious affidavit is the real problem. The problem is that the cops commit perjury not that we need to protect criminals. The standards for obtaining wiretap authority must be carefully enforced and mechanisms to prevent the illegal use by law enforcement of technical facilities must be implemented. As long as the target is truly a criminal enterprise then we have nothing to fear and we should support efforts to increase our ability to combat criminals and terrorists.
