Why wait 'til the last minute to start testing? 2004-08-24

Why didn't the schools test the various Beta and Release Candidate versions of Windows XP Service Pack 2? Ummm ... perhaps because Microsoft is notorious for slipping in last-minute changes which bung everything up? So you might just as well wait until the final product is out the door before you start testing it on mission-critical systems?

I've been working with Microsoft products for about 20 years, so I've seen a few things. It isn't just the schools, either. Major corporations and federal government agencies are also just now starting to do full-scale testing, and are discouraging if not outright forbidding the installation of SP2 until the testing is done.
