A Massachusetts businessman allegedly paid members of the computer underground to launch organized, crippling distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks against three of his competitors, in what federal officials are calling the first criminal case to arise from a DDoS-for-hire scheme.

And in what dream world are you living in? Keeping the system patched and firewalled and equipped with all sorts of security software does not make it secure at all. If a cracker wants to get in they will find a way no matter how good your defence is. However i agree with if all people would keep up-to-date it would make life so much harder for any cracker and many script kiddies would give up immediately.
If you want to secure a system cut it lose of all Network connections, use your own Diesel powered Power supplies and lock it away in a safe with 12 inch re-inforced steel doors. As soon as you connect a modem or a Network cable the system is open to the most experienced intruders and there is nothing you can do against it. If your system is a target is however another question.....
