FBI busts alleged DDoS Mafia
Kevin Poulsen, SecurityFocus 2004-08-26

A Massachusetts businessman allegedly paid members of the computer underground to launch organized, crippling distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks against three of his competitors, in what federal officials are calling the first criminal case to arise from a DDoS-for-hire scheme.

Computer attacks are not unusual this days where even a 6 year old kid with a pc can learn hacking within weeks. The issue here is that modern computer and networking systems are too vulnerable for attacks. Even if we download countless patch from the big ol' microsoft and update our virus definitions we cannot stop people from improvising ways to attack a system. I agree that computer owners must be aware of whats happening on their machine. But we must also consider there are many newbies in the compuetr world which mostly are unaware of the current situation in the computer world. I salute the FBI for efforts against computer crimes but one thing is for sure not even the FBI, Pentagon or The White House could stop computer crimes. I think we must start reassessing the situation here and think who or what is the problem? Is it the hackers or computer saboteurs? or is it the entire computer system architecture. Hackers are Hackers, Spammers are Spammers and we cannot do anything about it. Change the system!
