Shifting cyber threats menace factory floors
Kevin Poulsen, SecurityFocus 2004-10-07

The factory floor of a modern paper manufacturing plant is a ballet of heavy machinery and razor-sharp blades, pressing, dying, rolling, unrolling and cutting dead tree pulp by the ton. To James Cupps, it's something else, too: a target rich environment for cyber attacks.

I do not believe that it is not the responsibility of the software vendor to provide improved security. The proper design of secure networks can drastically reduce unauthorized access to these control systems. The problem is that rarely are control specialists (the people building these PLC networks) seasoned security specialists. I have never seen a proposal for the design of a PLC network that included any reference to security.
