Patriot Act tour carried a hefty price tag
Kevin Poulsen, SecurityFocus 2004-10-12

He may not have trashed any hotel rooms, but U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft spent over $200,000 of taxpayer money in a four-week, 31-city tour last year promoting the controversial USA PATRIOT Act, according to a report by Congressional auditors released Tuesday.

It is a wonder that the cost is justified. It is a very small amount, but it does show the politics of getting laws passed. The PA has some good 'ideas' that should remain ideas and not be put in to practice.

In a free society, there are always difficulties catching the people who will use the free systems to their own means. It is impossible to enforce the rules the way things are today.

Passing more rules will not make it any easier. We need enforcement of current rules and a complete restructure of the existing infrastructure that will allow better monitoring (opps - there is that word again) and control.

I am afraid that we are on our way to a national Internet access license. I am for that. The idea that the Internet is a 'free and open society' is bunk. Perhaps it was in the early days of Jughead and Archie, but today is a different world and the Internet has grown to be more than what is was intended.

Let's get this right. Personal certificates that track each person and device. Sort of an Internet drivers license.

Flames welcome - it is cold here in DC this morning...
