You're missing the point. Gov't doesn't always play fair, there is a well-documented record of severe abuse of law-enforcement (for ex.) power to track/interfere w/people and groups some gov't people find inimical to their interests, extra-legally or otherwise.
There are also issues of times when it is necessary to break the law -- such as horboring freed slaves 150 yrs ago, and some feel as strongly, some refugees today. Culture and laws change by these acts; no culture is a monolith and the U.S. has historically been good at allowing changes to leak through (occasionally anyways :-)
Just because "you are doing no wrong" does not make monitoring you RIGHT!
