The FBI is investigating the penetration of a university research system that housed sensitive personal data on a staggering 1.4 million Californians who participated in a state social program, officials said Tuesday.

Yet another reason to avoid the data profiling of your personal information. There really isn't any excuse for this type of behaviour.

The researchers had a responsibility as well as the administrators of the host that was exploited. This is not ok and the university obviously did not report in a timely manner (Aug 1, Aug 30 then late Sept for announcement). Why is that? Damage control I suppose.

Using academia as a reason to say this is 'ok' or they did not have the resources, manpower, poor college students, etc. is bunk.

Hold the university responsible for the incident.
