beau
a gentleman said in another thread: its got to do with support costs. I'm sure that diebold is responsible for supporting these machines, so they choose the product that offers the most hardware support, as well as cheapest software support and/or programability. Its the same reason that anyone else would choose windows over *nix. Not that I agree with the decision, but its easy to see why it was made.

if something goes wrong, i'm sure diebold wont be on the hook for making customer accounting information open to the public. who will be? your bank? microsoft?

I am very willing to bet that there will be a huge 'security concern' for everyone involved...which is everyone who has a bank account.
