Sony BMG's copy-protection problems grow

Sony BMG Music Entertainment announced plans on Wednesday to pull from store shelves nearly 2.6 million CDs that include a controversial copy-protection program, offer consumers an opportunity to return the discs, and create a more secure program to help remove the software from people's computers.

You need to re-check history. Both CDs and DVDs were originally media-only (audio and video/audio respectively). Computer hardware makers then adapted both to hold data as well, and since they were basing the data drives on the original non-data models it was easier to retain the ability to output a...
